August Scenic Run - 9th August

The August scenic run started from Dalemain House on an overcast Sunday morning. Four cars assembled for the run organised by Paul and Alisan; their first effort having only recently joined Fellmog. Participants were briefed on the arrangements for the day, the obligatory photograph of the cars taken and the usual debate concluded on whether to start with hoods up or down. The optimists won and it was with hoods down that we set off exactly on time at 10.30.

Initially heading south, the route paralleled the A66 in a westerly direction before joining it at Troutbeck to continue for the short distance to Keswick. Passing through the centre of Keswick we then picked up the B5289 to drive south along Derwentwater, collecting an extra Morgan at Grange, before continuing through Rosthwaite and Seatoller for the ascent of Honister Pass for a coffee (and sausage roll) break at the slate mine. With batteries recharged we continued alongside Buttermere and on via Lorton to Cockermouth. From Cockermouth the route then followed a collection of minor roads through various villages including Embleton and Hesket Newmarket to pick up the A66 from where it was just a short distance to Dacre and then on to reach Dalemain House once again for much welcome refreshments.

The route of just under 100 miles was in part classic Lake District and in part unknown lanes sampling the delights of the much overlooked ‘Back o’ Skiddaw’. The weather was good and with hoods down all the way, providing much relief from the heatwaves of recent weeks. The conversation over soup and sandwiches afterwards was full of praise and thanks to Paul and Alisan for having produced such an enjoyable and well organised contribution to the Fellmog programme.

Scenic Run and Picnic - 11th July

All I can say is that 8 cars and their owners had a brilliant day out in the sunshine. We met at Rheged and made our way by a very scenic route to Bowness on Solway with a coffee stop there at the RSPB bird reserve. The return trip was also very good despite a couple of diversions due to road closures. Richard & Sue led a coped admirably with the impromptu changes.

We then arrived at Paul & Kay’s house in Pooley Bridge where we sat outside overlooking Ullswater and ate our picnic. Soft drinks along with hot sausage rolls followed by strawberries and cream were kindly provided by our hosts which made our picnics more of a feast. They have a fabulous house, and it was very kind of them to let us visit. So, a big thank you to Richard, Sue, Paul & Kay for a brilliant day.

Scenic Run, 14th June

Lovely scenic run past Wild Boar Fell. We were lucky with fine temperate weather so hoods down. We then enjoyed lunch at the Black Swan. Unfortunately, Phil’s car blew out coolant on arrival as the header tank filler cap had disappeared. A small group then went on to Acorn Bank where the gardens - especially the Herb Garden - were delightful!
